The Vermont State Police (VSP) has reported that a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 89 Saturday morning resulted in the deaths of two Chittenden County residents.

Theodore Bowen, 32, of Essex Junction, was identified by police as the operator of the 2010 Nissan Altima that crashed shortly after 6 a.m. in the northbound section of the highway. Authorities say he and his passenger, 45-year-old Michelle Martin of Colchester, both died as a result of their injuries

According to VSP, preliminary investigation has revealed that the car was traveling northbound when it struck a guardrail on the right side of the road near Mile Marker 89.65 in South Burlington. It subsequently veered into the median, flipped, and struck a tree.

Police say it is too early to tell if speed or impairment were factors, and VSP’s report said it was unknown if either occupant of the vehicle was wearing a seat belt.

The crash is still under investigation, and anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Trooper Marchand at (802) 878-7111.
