Community service and leadership efforts by local students

Jessica Barnett, daughter of Kelly Barnett of Essex and Lee Barnett of Essex Junction, was recently recognized as one of five recipients of the University Mall’s Scholarship of Excellence. This $5,000 scholarship goes toward the first year of the recipient’s college tuition, and is awarded to local high school seniors who stand out as extraordinary examples of how individuals should give back to their communities through volunteering efforts and exemplary service. Finard Properties LLC has sponsored this scholarship since 2001. Barnett is a senior at Essex High School who is recognized for her work with the Athletic Leadership Council, Camp Ta-Kum-Ta and is also a member of the Above the Influence group of the non-profit Essex CHIPS organization. She has achieved honor roll since 2009 and was inducted into the National Honor Society in 2012. She has worked as a lifeguard at Sand Hill Pool and as a swim instructor at Maple Street pool for several summers. Barnett plans to attend St. Michael’s College in the fall.
