Longtime Colchester High School Athletic Director Leigh Mallory was described as a leader who handled his job with energy and class Tuesday when it was announced he will be retiring at the end of the school year.

“This is a complete surprise to me,” School Board member Dick Pecor said during Tuesday’s school board meeting. “I thought the energizer bunny would go on and on and on.”

Mallory worked for the district more than 30 years. Colchester High School Principal Amy Minor said she was aware during the school year that Mallory was considering retiring. The news was announced to students Wednesday.

“He bleeds blue and green. That’s what I always say about Leigh,” Minor said, referring to the school’s colors. “I rely on him in a huge way. I can’t tell you how much I’ll miss him.”

Minor is planning a retirement for Mallory after graduation in June.

“I want to recognize him for all his years of service and everything he’s done for students,” she said.

Pecor, a friend of Mallory’s, added: “Leigh is the epitome of a modern leader, an example to those in his profession … He has stood for what is good about sports and he always will.”
